Published in 1819 in a collection of stories entitled “The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.,” this tale by Washington Irving is considered one of America’s first ghost stories.

It has a special place in my heart for a number of reasons. The first is fond memories of watching the Disney film as a schoolgirl. More recently, my forays into geneaology have revealed the fact that I have relatives who settled in Tarry Town, and a few even who were married or buried at the Old Dutch Church. And, of course, the description of the rural Dutch community makes me want to nip into the kitchen to make pies, cakes, and oiliebollen.
